6-Dear Sirs: As the Executive Director of the Eastern Amputee Golf Association and an instructor for the National Amputee Golf Association's "First Swing / Learn to Golf" Seminar and Clinic, I have seen the wonderful benefits of a single rider car for the disabled person. The legislation requesting the availability of accessible cars for people with disabilities to use at public, resort and private (general public outing) golf courses should be approved. It is the right and fair thing to do. At our "First Swing" clinics, we demonstrate the use of the single rider golf car to those who attend the clinic. At each event, the response has been overwhelming positive. The availability of this car has brought hope to thousand of people who have lost the ability to stand and can only play from the seated position. It has also help those persons has lost their ability to maintain their balance while swinging a golf club (ie, stroke, MS, etc). They can now use the single rider car to lean back against the seat with the support of a seat belt that now helps them maintain their balance. There is no doubt that thousand and thousand of people with disability would use the car if available to play. The single rider cars today are safe and do not damage the course or greens. Last year, the EAGA was honored to be invited to hold its Eastern Regional Amputee Golf Championship at Bethpage State Park, Farmingdale, NY. The site of the 2002 and now the 2009 US Open roll out the red carpet for our members and participants. It was a terrific and memorable event. We had three players who must use a single rider car to play golf. Bethpage had two accessible cars in their fleet and the third player brought his own. We did have some rainy weather and the cars did terrific on the hills and the greens. Congratulations to Bethpage's management for understanding that the game of golf is for everyone. By the way, two of the gentlemen shot 89 and 87 respectively from their cars. Not Bad! They can be any partners anyday. I encourage the committee who is addressing Question #6 to require the availability of single rider golf car at all golf courses. They simply should be part of the golf car fleet. When not being used by a disabled person they can be used by a ranger or course marshal. I look forward to the day that I can tell all who attend our "First Swing" clinics to just call their local public golf course and reserve an accessible car to play a round of golf just like the rest of our citizens. Thanks for your efforts on behalf of the disabled community.
